Restrictive Sign Code

I am amazed at the extremes in various local jurisdictions' sign codes. In the most lenient county in the area, businesses can get away with almost anything. They install banners at the roadside, banners on their buildings, banners on the lightpoles, and A-Frames on the sidewalks. More often than not, clients come to me with issues such as those with businesses in the West Broad Street Overlay District in Western Henrico County (Greater Richmond) where no Attention-Getting devices are allowed. This includes banners, balloons, and other temporary signage.

One way we have found to be effective in legally getting around this is by wrapping their trucks, vans, or cars to turn them into a mobile billboard. This image (http://www.fellers.com), while amusing, illustrates the challenge our clients overcome using vehicle wraps in a difficult economy with restrictive sign codes.
